About us
The Project Support Association
Southern Africa (PSASA) is a non-profit organization established in 1998 and
in 2002 and 2003 got registered as a separate legal entity under section 21
(registration number 2002/026808/08) and non-for-profit company
(registration number 008-290-NPO). It commenced as a single peer education
project based in Kriel, Mpumalanga, the “Kriel Project” soon became one of
the growing number of peer education projects in the province and the
umbrella organization for these projects took on the name Mpumalanga Project
Support Association (MPSA). In late 1998, the National Department of Health
(NDOH) released information indicating that with rising rates of HIV amongst
the general population, the traditional healthcare system would be unable to
provide generalized care to all of those affected and alternate forms of
care would be necessary. MPSA’s community-based response to prevention was
well positioned as an inlet for Home Based Care projects. MPSA’s peer
education and home based care projects expanded throughout the region during
the late 1990’s. With expanding projects and coverage around the region, the
organization changed its name to Project Support Association Southern Africa
(PSASA), and capacity building of these community-based projects became an
integral component of PSASA’s work. Over the following years, Orphan and
Vulnerable Children (OVC) programme was integrated into the Home Based Care
projects.
